Endlich einen schlauen Eiffel-Compiler und dann erst noch inkl. IDE! Dankeschön!!

Wie geht das rechtlich, dass man die GPL-Version der IDE nicht zur Herstellung von kommerzieller Software verwenden darf? Ausschlaggebend für den Vertrieb von kompilierter kommerzieller Software müsste doch die Lizenz der Runtime-Umgebung (Library, Interpreter) sein und nicht die Lizenz der IDE?

Yup - die Run-Time ist auch GPL, nicht LGPL. Läuft also wie bei der Qt-Library: wenn man dagegen linkt, wird mal auch GPL - oder man kauft eine nicht-GPL-run-time von Eiffel Software.

Nope. Ich zitiere mich:
"It have the impression that Eiffel Software does not understand the GPL, they're claiming that one is not allowed to create proprietary, commercial applications with the GPL version of Eiffel Studio [...]
Remember: The GPL does not restrict the act of running a program at all and the Eiffel standard library is licensed under the DFSG-compliant Eiffel Forum License (a BSD License derivative). There is no possiblity to enforce such a non-commercial use only of EiffelStudio with these two very licenses."

Ich glaube da wird aneinander vorbeigeredet. Eiffel Software kann genauso gut verlangen, dass die Software nur im Kopfstand geschrieben werden darf und gleichzeitiger Kaffeegenuss verboten ist. Die Nutzungsbedingung geht nicht aus der GPL hervor, sondern kommt von Eiffel Software. "Non-commercial" hat mit GPL rein gar nichts zu tun.

Runtime /= Library, der generierte Eiffel Code ist gegen eine Runtime gelinkt (Garbage collector und co.) und diese ist auch unter GPL, womit das finale Produkt auch unter GPL ist.

Ja, da GPL eben den Nutzungszweck aussen vorlaesst. Darum gehts/gings mir auch.. man kann natuerlich kommerzielle Programme damit machen (sind halt alle GPL Derivate, siehe unteren Kommentar von AF).
